Yunnan 云南: The Place South of the Clouds
Yunnan is the most southwest province of China. Externally, it borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma; internally, it is neighbor to Guizhou, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan and Tibet. To say that Yunnan is probably the most diversified province in China in terms of ethnic minorities, landscape scenery and culture is not an overstatement.
Yunnan has the most ethnic minorities in China, which make up about 1/3 of the province’s population. Of China’s 55 ethnic minorities, the province is home to 51 and 25 of them exceed populations of 5,000. These ethnic minorities live together over vast areas in the region while some live in individual concentrated communities in small areas. The residences of the ethnic minorities are various and characteristic; their clothes are colorful and distinctive; some of them have their own languages and writings. Last, but not least, they celebrate varied and colorful festivals. The most famous ones include the Torch Festival of Yi Nationality, the March Fair of Bai Nationality, the Water-splashing Festival of Dai Nationality, the Zongge Festival of Jingpo Nationality and the Knife Pole Festival of Lisu Nationality, etc.

The Yi's Unique Culture
Yellow and orange play a predominant role the Yi's color scheme. They also have a unique style of roofs. One unique aspect of the Yi culture is that whenever they resettle in a new location they take some of the stones from their home to the new area and place it on their roofs. It also serves as weight to keep the shingles of the roof weighted down. While the practice continues to this day, they now use pre-manufactures stones for their roofs. You can see this on bus stops, homes and any buildings.
Discover Yunnan’s Beautiful Lakes and Rivers
Blue Moon Valley: A Hidden Gem
Blue Moon Valley
Blue Moon Valley actually is an extremely blue river meandering through a lush valley of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Seen from a distance, it resembles a blue crescent moon inlaid at the foot of the mountain. That’s how the place got its beautiful name! However, blue is not the only colour of the river. If it rains, the white mud and limestone rubble at the riverbed will be swirled up, making the water as white as milk. Therefore, local Naxi people name it White Water River (Baishui River).
The White Water River is fed by melting snow and ice running down from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The water is freezing; even in summer, and people still cannot bear the piercing cold when they dabble in the river. But it is a favorite iced drink in summer. Legend has it that, when two Naxi youngsters fall in love, the boy will be tested by standing barefoot in the cold river in winter to show his committed love for the girl. Folks believe that this tested love will last forever in the presence of the holy snow mountain. So, the river is considered the Love River in local people’s mind.
White Water River
While most of the water in the valley is turquoise in color, the section of White Water River changes color when it rains. The white mud and limestone rubble at the riverbed would swirl up making the water white. The heavier the rain, the more milky white it gets. I had been raining the past few days when we got here.
Lashi Hai Lake
Lashihai Lake
Lashihai Lake is situated 10 kilometers west of Lijiang in Yunnan Province. Lashi Lake is the largest lake in Lijiang, covering for 5,330 hectares. With the altitude of 2,437 meters, it is actually a lake cut off by Lashi Dam. Lashi is a word in ancient Naxi language, which means a “new desolate dam”. Lashihai Lake is a part of the Lashihai Plateau Wetland Nature Reserve, which was built in 1998 by the local government, in order to preserve the indispensable wetland habitat. Surrounded by mountains on all side, one can see Jad Dragon Snow Mnt on a clear day.
Paradise for Birds
Lashihai Lake enjoys a monsoon climate. Due to the construction of the dam, the lake has changed from a seasonal lake to a plateau lake with a certain water level. Now it has become the paradise for migratory birds, who spend their winter beside Lashihai Lake. Annually, there are about 57 species of birds come to Lashihai Lake during winter, including nine endangered species, such as the bar-headed goose, black cranes, and black-headed crane. The best time for bird viewing is from December to February. Visitors can rent the boats on the lake, which is the relaxing and leisure way for sightseeing and bird watching. Horse riding or biking around the lake is also a good choice.
Ancient Tea Horse Road
Riding to experience the Ancient Tea and Horse Road is the other must-try activity to get close to the local special culture. The ancient Tea and Horse Road, similar to the Silk Road, was an important trading route in the southwestern part of China and the horse was a significant form of transport on this route. Different from the tall and big horses on the grassland, the horses in Yunnan are small, but good at long-distance transporting. Consequently, it may feel different during the ride. Presently, only a small section of this old road is available for traveling.
Tiger Leaping Gorge 虎跳峡
Tiger Leaping Gorge 虎跳峡
Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡; Hǔ tiào xiá) is a scenic canyon on the Jinsha River, a primary tributary of the upper Yangtze River. It is located 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. It is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Heritage Site. Legend says the name comes from a hunted tiger escaping by jumping across the river at the narrowest point (still 25 metres (82 ft) wide), using the rock in the middle.
At a maximum depth of approximately 3,790 meters (12,434 feet) from river to mountain peak, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in the world. The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and hikers.

Lugu Lake
Lugu Lake
Lugu Lake, at an altitude of 2690 meters, is located on the border of Yunnan Province and Sichuan Province. There are many ethnic minority groups inhabited around the lake, such as the
Mosuo, Norzu, Yi, Pumi and Tibetan. The most numerous of these are the Mosuo people, a sub clan of the Naxi people, which are considered as “a living fossil for researching the marital development history of Human beings” and "the last quaint Realm of Matriarchy". Hence, Lugu Lake is called the “mother lake” by the Mosuo people and it becomes “The Kingdom of Women” and “Home of the Matriarchal Tribe”.

Shangri-La སེམས་ཀྱི་ཉི་ཟླ་གྲོང་ཁྱེར།
If you visit Shangri-La and never make it to Tibet you can say you have experience the Tibetan culture. If you didn't know where you were, you would think you are in a town in Tibet. The infuence of Tibetans in Shangri-La and the surrounding countryside is very evident.
The Tibetan Khata
Traditionally, giving Khata is a common and noble ritual in Tibetan buddhist temples, as well as in Mongolian and Tibetan communities. In the modern Tibetan area, hada is already an auspicious thing to show respect.
Offering Khata is a good tradition of the Tibetan people. People have regarded it as the supreme etiquette throughout the generations. Though not as valuable as gold, it is more revered than gold. Because it symbolizes a heart of gold, representing the most sincere feelings, the best wishes and the highest respect. Its meaning expresses friendship, harmony, kindness and well-being.

Dongchuan Red Earth 东川红土地
The red soil boasts the most typical and featured red soil in Yunnan highland. Experts regard it as the second marvelous red land in the world following the one in Rio Brazil. It became famous when a photographer saw it from his plane. He went back and searched until he found the location and posted his photos in social media.
Li Chaoguo: The Icon of The Red Soil
If you do a Google search for Red Earth or Dongchuan in Yunnan, this person's photo would dominate your hits. His name is Li Chaoguo and he's been doing it for decades. He is the icon of the Red Soil at Luosiwan village. We were so lucky to have seen him. He's been photographed thousands of time, but I bet less than 5 of the people ever bothered to ask his name or even tip him for taking the photo. We loved his smile!
Stone Forest 石林
Kunming Stone Forest, Shilin 石林, is a spectacular set of limestone groups and the representative of south China’s karst landscape. It is one of the most important attractions of Yunnan.
Kunming Stone Forest, Shilin 石林
The tall rocks seem to arise from the ground in a manner somewhat reminiscent of stalagmites, or with many looking like petrified trees, thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone.
The Greater and Lesser Stone Forests
The Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, covering an area of 12 square kilometers (5 sq. mi.), is the main scenic area. When people say 'the Stone Forest', it always refers to the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests. The stones there are oddly shaped, with pillars magnificently standing erect like a forest.
Ashima Incarnation Stone
阿诗玛化身石
According to legend, the forest is the birthplace of Ashima (阿诗玛), a beautiful girl of the Yi people. After falling in love she was forbidden to marry her chosen suitor and instead turned into a stone in the forest that still bears her name. Each year on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, many Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival (火把节 Huǒbă Jié), which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.
Jiuxiang Scenic Area 九乡风景区
Jiuxiang Scenic Area in Kunming, also called the Museum of Karst Caves, is a cluster of hundreds of karst caves, forming the largest such complex in China. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Stone Forest. Jiuxiang Scenic Area and Stone Forest are both karst landscapes. There is a saying that “in Kunming, people can appreciate the stone forest above the ground and karst caves underground”.
Located in the Yi and Hui Autonomous Township of Yiliang, the Jiuxiang Scenic Area not only has beautiful landscapes but also displays the custom and culture of the Yi and Hui minorities. Here, you can appreciate lush forests, narrow canyons and underground caves. The Myth, a film starring Jackie Chan, took this special landscape as a backdrop. The main scenic spots of the Jiuxiang Scenic Area are Green Shady Valley, Terrifying Gorge, Grand Lion Hall, Twin Waterfalls, Fairy Fields and Bat Cave.
Green Shady Valley Gorge 荫翠峡 (Yincui Xia)
The Green Shady Valley is quiet and charming with a length of 600 meters.
The river on the valley bottom is nearly wholly shaded by dense green trees, hence the name. Taking a boat on the river, you will see verdant cliffs of various shapes. The green shady valley is also named Valentine’s Valley. Legend says that young men and women of Yi ethnic group will gather here (girls on one side and boys on the other) sing songs in the hope they would find their soulmate. It is really a nice place to relax.
Terrifying Gorge 惊混峡 Jīnghún Xiá
It is the most spectacular underground valley in China with a depth of 100 meters.
Terrifying Gorge 惊混峡 Jīnghún Xiá
The gorge is nearly 100 meters high and only three or four meters wide at the narrowest point. It is the deepest underground canyon found in China. The cliffs on both sides of the strait are shattered and the stream springs at the bottom of the gorge are magnificent. Not only can you see the canyon green trees, as well as touch the cliff rocks, but you can also hear the rushing sound of the canyon.
Grand Lion Hall 雄狮厅 Xióngshī Tīng
Grand Lion Hall, an underground oval hall with a pitched vault. It is named after a group of stalagmites shaped like a lion near the south exit of the hall. This bridge is called Diehong Bridge 叠虹桥, a subterranean natural bridge. The hall covers 15,000 square meters (the area of three football pitches) but hasn’t got any supporting pillars.
Lying Dragon Cave (Wòlóng Dòng 卧龙洞)
A dragon-shaped underground river passes through the cave
Female and Male Flying Waterfalls Cíxióng Fēi Pù 雌雄飞瀑
Two huge waterfalls, called Twin Waterfalls, with a drop of 30 meters (98 feet), pour over the cliffs in the cave into a 10-meter (32-foot) deep pool, making a deafening sound. They look like two loyal lovers jumping from the cliff hand in hand to die for love (with the right imagination), hence they were named the “Female and Male Flying Waterfalls” (Cíxióng Fēi Pù 雌雄飞瀑).
Jackie Chan’s “The Myth 神话”
The waterfalls was a backdrop in Jackie Chan's movie The Myth 神话
The Fairy Land (The Sacred Terraces) 神田 shén tián
Curbing Dams are scattered in graceful disorder with a total area of 100 square meters. And each dam has a depth of 10 meters. The unique karst landform is called curbing dams in geology and the smaller one curbing basin. Distributing in a grandiose manner, it is rare in the world and has been deemed “the Number One” of its kind in the world.
