The history of HGO goes back
two generations. The director's mother, a fine Christian lady, used the money she had and
built a house on her land in Fengxian. It's on the outskirt of Shanghai. She took in
children that were disabled and abandoned by their parents from some of the poorest
provinces in China.
HGO is the only privately run orphanage that we know of. As a result, HGO has been
funded solely by the director's family and donations. Our relationship with HGO began when
our international church began supporting them in the late 1990's. Since 2009, Melissa has been
leading a team of volunteers once a month to run activities with the children. Melissa has also
bought good quality lean meat, seafood. as well as cooking essentials like oil, soy sauce. On
special occasions, Melissa prepares special food items like brownies and chicken nuggets. Very
healthy! For the past few years, Mr. Sun, director, has opened a bakery and has taught the children paper
quilling with the aim of teaching them a set of skills they can use when they are too old to stay at
the orphanage.
Our first visit to HGO since the Covid lock down. Since our last visit in Jan. the director has had several heart issues. Just last month in Aug, he had to have by-pass heart surgery. Praise god it went well and is currently staying at the orphanage because there are more people than can assist him. He looks much better.
Since Mid-Autumn Festival was soon approaching, we thought it would be good to visit. We had such a great time of catching up and interacting with the children.
What a difference half a year makes. During our last visit in Jan. for Chinese New Year meal, the garden was practically barren. Now it's like a jungle with corn, leaks, peanuts, other vegetables, as well as oranges and persimmons. So glad to see that they are enjoying the fruit of their labor!
We feel happy and ashamed at the same. After eleven years of thinking that the girl was an orphan, we discovered that not only is she NOT an orphan, but her mother is the cook. In all our time of going there, we never saw them together nor heard her address her as mom. Once we found out, the resemblance is so great. The mother brought her daughter with her 11 years ago when she first started to work for the orphanage.
Melissa was able to do an activity using paper-cut. She showed how to use all the small pieces to form English words as well as Chinese characters.
