Christine & Patrick (center) and our friends Kin & Mary
Bo Ai School
We were introduced to the school by our long time friends Kin and Mary from Houston. Kin is a doctor and for over a decade has brought teams of medical personnel to run clinical check-ups to not only the students but also the villagers in the community. The school was founded by Christine and Patrick. They truly lived out Micah 6:8.
After much prodding from our friends Kin & Mary, I was able to get some time off from school and Melissa & I made our way to BoAi on June 2018. It was a very special trip. Even though we stayed there a short time, we were able to connect with some of the staff and get to know some of the students. But more special was that Kin had a team of doctors as well as college students to run the clinic and do some English lesson. One of the doctors that was in the team came to me and said, “Leo, you may not remember me but I was in your Sunday school and you were my youth director. Thank you for making a difference.” What a joy it was to hear that. Her daughter was part of the teaching team of college students. After we returned home, I let my colleague, Chris, know of the possibility of a SoH team visiting. So on March 2019, Chris and I took a trip and by November 2019 we had taken two teams of parents to BoAi. According to the parents, it was the most impactful SoH trip they had taken. The most special thing about this school is that it is mostly funded by donations. While it is open to the public, the government subsidizes only partially the daily operational costs of the school. The land, every building and all equipment has been donated by hotels, companies and individuals. Their next phase of expansion is to be certified to teach high school. They need funds to build and upgrade facilities to meet the government's requirement.
Three Villagers we got to know
70-year-old still farms his land
June 2018:
Man farms the land in front of the caves he grew up in
This man was the first person we saw on our walk around near the caves. We found out that he is over 70 years old and moved out of the caves when the government said it was unsafe. That was a few decades ago. But it is his family's land so he continues to farm the land. He gave us a tour.
Wang Ming Shan: My Old Friend
June 2018:
My first photo of the village had Mr. Wang in it
Little did I know that the man in this photo would become my "old friend". I met him later when he was waiting to see the team of doctors at the clinic. Unfortunately, I did not see him again until my third trip to the school. We were so happy to meet up again and he invited me into his home.
Lady whose home was a cave
March 2019:
This lady lived most of her life in the caves behind her
During our first trip in 2018, Melissa and I noticed the cave behind the fence. I met the lady during my second trip. She had lived most of her life in the caves behind her. Because the hazards it pose, the government had her move out recently. Her new home is right in front of the caves.
BoAi Facilities
BoAi Campus Tour
The school is located in Qinyuan County. Currently there are over 400 students from thirteen nearby villages. Some of the villages are far away and during severe winter weather, the students remain in school until the roads are safe for traveling. Over 300 volunteers come each year to share their expertise with the staff and students.
BoAi Cafeteria
Classrooms and Residence Hall
Over 300 primary and above students reside in the dorms. Many come from villages that are far away. The number of students per room is half what local schools provide. The only fees BoAi collect is for room and board. The fees depend on which village a student is from. But the most one has to pay is 4200 a year. And if a family is unable to pay, there are subsidies that are provided. No student will be turned down due to finances.
The staff residence hall are single unit rooms with community bathroom and showers. There are a couple of apartments. One ofr the director, Christine and Patrick. Another for families. These apartment also have kitchens in addition to private bathroom.
Feng Cun Village Life
Team of Doctors Serving the Village
Kin has been involved with BoAi school for a number of years. He has been bringing teams of medical doctors to provide essential care to the villagers and students. Because of their connection, they can bring in prescription medicine to meet some of the illnesses they encounter. Many of the villagers had never been seen a doctor before due to availability or finances. This service gives the people a chance to get some much needed medical care. It is truly a long distance house call.
The Caves of Fengcun
It is amazing how many caves were used as homes and how many are still being used if only for storage. I would not be surprized if there are some caves I have not seen in the area that people still live in them.

Distant Village of Students
The Village of FengCun
The homes on the side of the road where the school is are the oldest in the village. These are the ones near the caves. Homes across the road from the school are newer. One can see the changes different seasons bring to the area: from barren golden to flush green.

The next phase BoAi is facing is upgrading the school in order to teach high school. One thing they must do is turn the field in the photo into a track and field that must include a soccer field. So they are raising funds to commence the work needed.
Yuezhai Village Taiyue Military Region
The Yuezai village served as a military region during the Japanese War. Its caves served as a natural protection. It has been preserved as a small museum displaying some of the mementos. The caretaker lives in one of the caves.
Teaching and Learning at BoAi
My First and Second Trip
June 2018 March 2019:
Observations of classrooms
During our first trip, we observed some of the lessons taking place in the classrooms. It was a breath of fresh air seeing the teachers having hands-on with learning. On my second trip, I was prepared to deliver a character assembly. Christine helped interpret.
First Parent Trip
May 2019:
Our first trip with parents from Puxi YCIS
Our first trip to BoAi with our Puxi parents and students was a great success. Parents commented that this was the most impactful SoH trip they had taken. Living among the staff and students and hearing the history touched their lives so much that upon their return to Shanghai, they raised over 60K Chinese Yuan. This donation made it possible for BoAi to enclose the previous open area below the middle school classroom to protect against severe cold and stormy weather.
One of the things that amazes me is the creativity parents bring for lessons planned. In all my years of taking parents on these trips, each team has come up with new and creative ways to engage the students.
Second Parent Trip
November 2019:
Pudong Campus Parent Trip
Many of the parents who joined the trip have joined most of our other SoH trips. This trip was unique in that they lived on campus and experienced what the other students and staff experience. The trip influenced their lives in many ways.
One unique aspect about the school is that all students are given responsibilities. All cleaning of classroom, school grounds, dishes and cafeteria are done by students. There is rotation schedule when your team must do the dishes and clean the cafeteria and others clean the school ground before breakfast.
In keeping in line, we had our team do the dishes and clean the school grounds. Most of our students had never held a broom, much less do the dishes. The parents loved it. By the end of our stay, they were asking if they could send the kids for a week or two of summer “camp”.
We had one of our most diverse group of parents joining us on this trip. We had a Psychiatrist, a Physicist, a parent who also happened to be our Primary Art teacher. It was great seeing them step outside their comfort zone, except the art teacher who was in her zone! They also work so well together and brought so much into the lessons.
When the school found out that we had a parent with PhD in Physics teaching at a prestigious Chinese university, they asked if he could give a lecture to the upper middle school students. He jumped at the opportunity.
