Yao Ethnic Minority
The Yao ethnic group has a population of over 2.6 million. They live mainly in Guangxi, Hunan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Jiangxi Provinces together with the Zhuang. The Red Yao or Younuo of Longsheng live among other ethnic groups in the mountains of south central China. The Red Yao women of Longji are noted for their long hair. They are the most famous of about 20 "Yao" people groups. The Yao of Bama are noted for their unusual longevity and healthy diets.

About 60 percent of all Yao live in Guangxi, and most of the traditional ones live in the mountains north of Guilin. They have adapted to living in the mountains. Many live in Longsheng County, Guangxi where the famed Longji Rice Terrace is located.
