Jilin: Along the River
The name "Jilin" originates from girin ula: a Manchu phrase meaning "along the river". Jilin borders three provinces and two countries: Heilongjiang, Inner Mongoloia and Liaoning; Russia and North Korea. We first came to Jilin in 1987 for our honeymoon. Jilin City was one of our last stops. We wanted to see the top natural wonders of China: Rime. Jilin City is located at the river bank of Songhua River in the north of China. In winter, the temperature of Jilin can drop to -30℃. Because of the low temperature, and the south wind, there is in high humidity. And because of the Fengman Hydropower Station, the temperature of water of Songhua is about 4℃, making water vapour rise up and attach to cold objects, and forming the scene of rime. Rime has the function of purifying air, so when you see rimes you may also feel the fresh air.
We were not disappointed. However soon after seeing the rime on the trees, we visited a park and while walking around, we were mugged. The man struck my head and was very surprized that I did not fall, but fought back. During the struggle, my camera opened and the roll of film was exposed ruining all the photos I had taken of our honeymoon up to that point. So in 2018, we wanted to retrace our honeymoon journey (somewhat) and returned to Jilin. But this time our focus was Changbai Mountain that borders North Korea.

Jiling Scenery
As we've driven through a large portion of China's countryside over the years, I have always wondered what it would be like to spent time in these places.
Hot Spring
The hot springs in the Changbai Mountains have been called "magic water". Due to their high levels of hydrogen sulfide and various microelements, they have major medicinal value and the rocks around the hot springs have been dyed many bright colors.
Jilin Sunsets & Sunrises
In all our travels in China, my only pet peeve about our trip itineraries is that there is no accommodation for sunset or sunrise photography. I live for that stuff. So most of my sunset photos throughout China as been taken from the back of the bus traveling at nearly 100km per hour.
Changbai Mnt 长白山
Changbai Mnt 长白山 means "Forever-White Mountain" because its top is covered with snow all the year round. Changbaishan is a dormant volcano. It stands on the border between China and North Korea.
Heavenly Lake 天池
Plunging to a maximum depth of 373 meters, one third of Heavenly Lake lies inside North Korea. With an altitude of 2,189 meters above sea level, the area where the lake set is a crater. One-third of the lake is in North Korea. We were very lucky to have been able to see the lake. Make sure you click the “Odds are Stacked...” Info to read about the odds of seeing Heavenly Lake.
