Liaoning: The Golden Triangle
Liaoning Province, often called 'the Golden Triangle' because of its superior geographical location, includes boundaries on the Yellow Sea, the Bohai Gulf, and the Yalu River, which makes it the closest gateway to the Korean Peninsula. Liaoning, meaning "Pacified Liao", is named after the Liao River that runs through the province. The character 宁 is used frequently in Chinese place names including Ningxia, Xining and Nanning. The current name was first adopted in 1929, and restored in 1954 upon the merging of the Liaoxi ("West Liao") and Liaodong ("East Liao") provinces.
Our visit to Liaoning was cut short due to our mugging in Jilin during our honeymoon in 1987. Our only time to visit Liaoning was when we went to Shenyang to visit our close friends during Christmas in 2004. We did not see anything else. However, my faith in the Chinese people was restored. During one of the clear days, we went out ot play in the snow. As you can see from the photos below, we had a lot of fun with the snow. Well I had put my camcorder down somewhere and totaly forgot about it. When we began to pack to return to Shanghai late that evening I realized that the camcorder was gone. All the film and photos I had taken was gone. We quickly went out to look for it in the places we played in the snow. No camcorder to be found.
Upon our return to Shanghai, I began to look for another camcorder so that I can play my old video I had already filmed. We got a call from our friend in Shenyang saying that someone found it and gave it to the compound manager. Thinking that it had to belong to a foreigner, he asked my friend. My faith in humanity was restored. And even more amazing, the high school students were coming to Shanghai later in the week. It was literally hand delivered to us.
